Add 3/4 cup of shortening to a bowl.

Add 1 cup of sugar to the shortening.

Combine the shortening and sugar.

Add 1 egg to the mixture.

Add 1/4 cup of molasses to the mixture.

Pour 2 cups of flour into a separate bowl.

Add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon to the flour.

Add 1 and a quarter teaspoons of ginger to the flour.

Add an eighth of a teaspoon of cloves to the flour.

Add 2 teaspoons of baking soda to the flour.

Pour the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients.

Combine all the ingredients to form the cookie dough.

Portion the dough using a cookie scoop.

Roll the dough into smooth balls.

Coat the dough balls in sugar.

Place the sugar-coated dough balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Press the dough balls down to flatten them slightly.
